Thirty Three by the Sea

If you’re unfamiliar with Jamie Burnard, he earned his spurs starting work as a kitchen porter at The Cricket Inn at Beesands, where he acquired a love of fishing and made friends with the skippers of the day boats. Watching them bring in their catches each day he developed huge respect for the fishermen. The value of the relationships forged then is one of the reasons he can get his hands on the best shellfish and freshly caught fish that the South Devon coast has to offer every day.

His passion for fish cooking has only grown over the years. Jamie says, “I used to look at Nathan Outlaw’s menus and hoped that one day I’d own a seafood restaurant, and here we are, another wish fulfilled. The produce here is world class. That is what sets South Devon apart. I have eaten seafood all over the world, and there is nowhere that offers fish and seafood as good as here!”

Jamie has proved himself as a cornerstone of Kingsbridge’s fine dining scene with the hugely sought-out foodie destination on Mill Street. He and his team intend to turn Thirty-three by the sea into the second-best restaurant in the area (after his flagship venue, of course).

You can expect all the exciting food that multi-award-winning chef, Jamie Burnard and his team are famous for serving up, within view of the glorious South Devon coastline.

Meet Jamie

Thirty-three by the sea at Bolberry Down was launched in 2025 by the talented and ever-evolving creative chef, Jamie Burnard. Formerly known as Oceans and now rebranded, it is quickly establishing itself as the new ‘go to’ seafood restaurant in the area.

Following the towering success of Twenty-seven in Kingsbridge, opened back in 2018, and now recognised as a destination restaurant for foodies across Devon and those from further afield, including Michelin inspectors (awarded a Plate in 2021) Jamie soon got a new creative itch that needed scratching and his long-awaited dream to open a dedicated seafood restaurant was soon realised.

Starting life in Wales, Jamie moved to Devon when he was twelve, and started his cheffing career at the Cricket Inn, Beesands, as a kitchen porter.

After a spell as a teenage tearaway, he soon seized every opportunity he could to learn from some of the most respected chefs in the area, beginning his culinary education as a stagiaire (essentially a kitchen internship) and worked his way around some of the best kitchens in the South Hams and Plymouth.

After several years of working hard, winning awards and rosettes for various restaurants and hotels, Jamie was restless for his own establishment. Along came Twenty-seven, and a rich history ensued.

When asked what he enjoys most about his job, Jamie responded, ‘It gives me so many opportunities to be creative every day. I love writing menus and experimenting with new dishes. I also love making people happy.  It gives you such an adrenaline buzz doing a busy service, and it is fantastic to hear that people enjoyed the food.’

Jamie’s accolades include:

  • South West Chef of the Year Awards 2015 – Professional Chef and Overall winner
  • South West Chef of the Year Awards 2015 - Best Menu winner
  • Taste of The West - Best Restaurant 2018/2019

Meet Claire

Claire Jayne managed the front of house at Twenty Seven in Kingsbridge for over four years and on top of all the glowing reviews lavished upon her in Trip Advisor and Open Table by ecstatic diners, her talents were recognised at the Food Drink Devon awards 2022. Winning Best Dining Restaurant, Claire was visibly moved to receive the award, especially as it was presented to her by Jamie – her partner and the chef & owner of Twenty Seven.

Claire has two daughters, Bryony and Darcie. In a former life, Claire was a swimming instructor, and has her own loyal following from those days. Now, she has a passionate patronage amongst foodies, as they know if she’s around their every need will be taken care of to her very best endeavours.

The whole team here love her and love working for her, as she knows the business from the bottom up, and understands the trickiness of service, which is demonstrated in the empathy she shows them.
